LG Optimus 3D Offers 3D Display and Stereoscopic Photos

Recent years have seen a re-emergence in the popularity of 3D technology, something that was very popular in cinema a few decades ago. With most blockbuster movies now incorporating 3D there has been a big move to bring the technology to other devices such as home TVs, something that was not feasible back in the heyday of 3D cinema. The Optimus 3D marks the first attempt by a major phone manufacturer to bring some form of 3D technology to mobile phones and marks a significant step in the on-going evolution of smartphones.

The Optimus 3D comes with a 3D LCD screen measuring 4.3" with a sharp WVGA resolution of 480 x 800. The 3D effects produced by the screen do not require 3D glasses to work properly, as they are produced by a layered screen with filters. While the plus side of this is that glasses are not necessary (and many phone owners would feel stupid wearing them), the downside is that the 3D effect is only really prominent from certain angles. While this 3D screen may be fairly rudimentary at the moment, it still offers a more 3D experience than any other phone on the market.

The Optimus 3D runs on Google Android 2.2 Froyo, but will be upgradeable to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The phone also comes with LG's new 3D UI that has been designed specifically for use with 3D devices like this phone. Also present is a standard touchscreen accelerometer for auto screen rotation, as well as a new gyro sensor for 3D dimensional controls.

The large screen is excellent for watching videos and the Optimus 3D supports the playback of an impressive 1080p quality video. When it comes to 3D videos the new Optimus can support a quality of 720p and an HDMI port allows you to watch videos through your home TV (excellent if you already own a 3D TV). This can also be achieved through Wi-Fi which comes with DLNA support, allowing you to hook the Optimus 3D up to any other DLNA enabled device.

The really impressive 3D feature of the new Optimus is with its dual 5 megapixel cameras which, when used in conjunction, allow you to capture 720p 3D videos as well as stereoscopic images. The cameras can also be used in a standard 2 dimensional manner, with 1080p 2D videos supported. These cameras come with an LED flash, and a secondary camera is available on the front of the phone which can be used for video calling with services like Google Talk.

With high speed 3G and Wi-Fi connections the Optimus 3D is ideal for all forms of internet activity including email and instant messaging. The Optimus 3D comes with threaded SMS and integration for social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter. The Optimus comes with YouTube and Adobe Flash 10.1 support soy you can enjoy streaming video content from online.

There are some people already accusing the Optimus 3D, and similar phones in development, as being nothing more than a gimmick. The technology is not perfect yet and it has its limitations but it is still the best available in terms of 3D technology on phones. Even ignoring the screen, the cameras on the Optimus allow you to capture true 3D videos which would be a good enough reason to be interested in this phone, and the Optimus 3D comes with excellent video support when it comes to 2 dimensions as well.
