LG Optimus Pad Brings 3D Cameras to Tablet Market

The Optimus Pad is LG's first entry into the ever expanding touchscreen tablet market, and the first such tablet to introduce 3D technology. LG have also been the first manufacturer to introduce 3D to the world of smartphones although, unlike the LG Optimus 3D, the Optimus Pad cannot display 3D content itself. Instead, 3D makes its appearance through the dual cameras found on the rear, which allow you to record 3D videos to view on other 3D enabled devices. The LG Optimus Pad will also be one of the first tablets to come with dual core processors, making it twice as fast in its operations as the first generation of tablet devices.

The LG Optimus Pad also comes on Google Android 3.0 Honeycomb, the first version of Android to be designed specifically for tablets. Earlier versions of Android had only been designed for smartphone use and had been slightly modified by manufacturers for use with their tablets. The Honeycomb version is much more suited to tablets and features a multi-finger halographic interface that allows you to zoom in on wallpapers and widgets. The Optimus Pad also comes with an accelerometer and gyro sensor for additional controls.

With dual core 1GHz Tegra 2 processors and 1GB RAM the Optimus Pad offers a high degree of processing power. At 8.9", the Optimus Pad's screen is placed midway between the larger devices like the 10" Apple iPad, and the smaller 7" tablets such as the Galaxy Tab. The screen comes with a WXGA resolution (1280 x 768) that supports 1080p video playback.

The Optimus Pad features a front facing camera for video calling and two rear facing cameras. These two rear facing cameras can be used in conjunction to produce 3D videos or stereoscopic images. The rear facing 5 megapixel camera can also capture 720p videos and is excellent for taking standard photos as well. The front facing camera is 2 megapixels and also comes with HD video recording and can be used with video messaging services such as Google Talk.

The Optimus Pad comes with excellent 3G and Wi-Fi connections making it ideal for web browsing. The Optimus Pad also comes with 4G support where available, although this feature will not be usable in markets such as the United Kingdom where there are no 4G networks in place. The Optimus Pad comes with 32GB internal storage space for storing music and video content, as well as any other content you may wish to store on the device. The Optimus Pad also features an HDMI port through which you can hook up the device to a home TV.

The Optimus Pad is certainly an impressive debut tablet from LG and it is interesting to see an attempt to introduce 3D to this emerging market. While initial reports had speculated that the tablet would support 3D content, either in a similar manner to the pseudo-3D Optimus 3D or through additional 3D glasses, this is sadly not the case. The dual 5 megapixel cameras however should provide enough to keep 3D enthusiasts interested as this is at present a feature unique to LG's tablet.
