LIVING OUT LOUD--December 2010

This is a blog about a life (mine) that is really largely uneventful but for me quite satisfying, or as Shakespeare once so aptly wrote, "a poor thing but mine own". I plan to give the bare bones outline of the days, the weeks etc. of my daily experiences with pertinent ( I hope) comments. Why would I want to do this? I suppose, because I can!

December 2010

The holiday season is here with all of its sparkle and excitement and unfortunately also all of its added stress. Although there are always wonderful things for all of us to anticipate --family, friends, surprises, good food, there are also always many moments of stress and anxiety. The trick is to maximize the pleasure and minimize the anxiety. By careful planning and wise decisions we can do both so that everyone in the family can hopefully look forward this year to having a really joyous holiday.

The mid term elections have come and gone and we are now left with an electorate that has chosen to go in a different direction for the next two years. It is a direction that we have already tried with unfortunately disastrous results--tax cuts for the rich and cutting spending by removing the safety net under the middle class and the poor. I foresee a difficult confrontation in the congress between these opposing philosophies --between those who will try to implement this direction and those who will try to stop them. The ultimate result will be that for the next two years we will probably not be able to move the country forward toward more prosperity and new job creation. I hope I am wrong in this assessment and that the new congress will somehow try to find a middle ground on which the opposing sides will be able to find basis for compromise which will hopefully benefit us all.

I recently saw a movie based on a true story "The Stoning of Soraya M." It is the story of a woman who in 1986 in Iran was condemned for having sex with someone who was not her husband. She was accused by her husband who really just wanted to be rid of her. Although she was innocent, she was found guilty by her village and was subsequently stoned to death. The movie vividly depicts the brutal stoning, and for those of us who like to think that we live by just laws, it is especially shocking to see such unusually violent and primitive behavior still practiced in our century

Unfortunately as I write this, a woman ,Sakineh Mahammadi Ashiani again has been charged with adultery and condemned to stoning in Iran. Because of international pressure, Iran has since stopped the stoning and although she is now scheduled to be hanged, has promised to review her case. Her son (who says she is not guilty) and her lawyer have also been imprisoned for coming to her aid. The world is again watching and putting pressure on Iran to give this woman a more just trial and release her son and her lawyer. Let us hope that the international spotlight on this case in Iran will bring some positive results.

On a more hopeful note the United Nations has recently passed a bill releasing four billion dollars in funds to be used for health care for women and children around the world. It is estimated that this money will save millions of lives in the future. It is an encouraging example of what people working together in a positive way can ultimately accomplish.

I will be back again soon writing more about "Living Out Loud", to try to understand and illuminate not only daily living but also some of the complicated world issues that effect not only my life, but all of our lives.
