LIVING OUT LOUD--June--2010

This week, I am beginning a blog about a life (mine) that is really largely uneventful but for me quite satisfying, or as Shakespeare once so aptly said, "a poor thing but mine own". I plan to give the bare bones outline of the days, the weeks etc. of my daily experiences with pertinent ( I hope) comments. Why would I want to do this? I suppose, because I can!

The news coverage this week is mostly about the BP oil disaster in the gulf and the suffering of so many people that has been and will continue to be tragically effected. The unspoken scenario behind this news is that the company was largely unprepared to deal with this accident and was in self-denial that an accident was possible. The co- enablers of this tragedy are the governmental agencies that should have been enforcing the environmental and safely rules that protect our environment and the at- risk workers in industries like oil drilling and coal mining etc. but who have apparently failed to adequately do their jobs. Let us hope that this will be a wake-up call to our industries and our government agencies that they both must do much better in protecting all of us from these disastrous accidents so that this will never happen again, and also let all of us begin to watch them more carefully and make sure that they will always continue to do what is necessary for the protection of us all.

Last week I started to read a courtroom mystery book " Exile" by Richard North Paterson, but it turned out to be a very in-depth review of the Palestine-Israel crisis. The author has done extensive on- site research on the backgrounds of both the Palestinians and the Israelis and has written a book which seems to me very fair to both sides and certainly helped me to gain greater insight into the complexities and the emotional volatility of the conflict there. This conflict is not really about a good guy-- bad guy scenario but rather about complex issues and difficult decisions. This crisis, however difficult, must be solved now because it is beginning to destabilize the entire world. It will ultimately take compromise and understanding by both sides about the history and the needs of two diverse cultures which must ultimately learn to allow each other to live with security and dignity.
