La Jolla, California

The history of La Jolla begins long ago and well before the area received its current name

. Native Americans were the first to inhabit the area around 10,000 years ago. Archeologists found artifacts that point to a group of people making the area their home, but so few of the artifacts were available it has been difficult to determine much about the people who first lived there.

The current name of the area, La Jolla, has an interesting story as well. No one really knows from whence the name came, although there are some various theories. Some believe that it came from the Spanish La Joya, which means the jewel. Others believe that it might have come from the term Woholle, which means hole in the mountains in Native American. It is unlikely that the true origins of the name will ever come to light.

The area of La Jolla became a part of San Diego in 1850, but people didnt live there until nearly 20 years later. The city and the community grew slowly, but things really started to take off once the railroad came through in the 1890s. Because it was getting easier to reach the area, real estate developers started to sell oceanfront property, even back then! The first hotel opened in 1893 to accommodate travelers and those who wanted to see the area.

At the turn of the last century, only about 350 people lived in the area. Tourism started to boom, and after the end of the First World War, La Jolla had close to 4,000 people living there. After the Second World War, nearly 7,700 people lived there, and the number continued to climb. Today, you will find more than 40,000 people that call the area of La Jolla home.

When you consider the areas beauty and all that it has to offer, you can see why people flock to the area for vacations and to make their homes. Even celebrities love the area. Some of the notable celebrities that have lived in the area include Gregory Peck, Anne Rice, Raquel Welch, Doug Flutie, and even Dr. Seuss!

If you want to see what all the fuss is about, you should spend some time in the area. It offers great beaches, wonderful restaurants, and plenty of attractions. You might even find the area so entrancing that you choose to buy a home in La Jolla.
