Labyrinth of Egypt and Flinders Petrie

Despite the fact that there are very few remains, and that the historical details vary in details, the Labyrinth of Egypt did actually exist more than four thousand years ago. The Labyrinth was in the area that we call Fayum, near the town Arsinoe, which was near the pyramid at Hawara.

In 1888, Flinders Petrie discovered the actual location of the Labryinth of Egypt. The entire massive structure and foundation had been reduced to a large bed of stones and fragments. There were a few very interesting artifacts that were recovered from the site. This included bits and pieces of the foundations, door jambs, large shrines made of granite, a well and a stone statue of Amenemhat III, who is widely believed to have been the original builder responsible for building the Labyrinth.

The original purpose of the Labyrinth is still a subject of great discussion. Local governments may have used the site for administrative meetings. It is more likely however, that the site was was created to be an impressive spiritual place of worship. What is clear, based on the statue fragments of various gods and deities that were found at the site, is that that the Labyrinth was a place where people came to worship gods and goddesses.

The Greek writer Herodotus visited the Labyrinth and recorded his observations and impressions in his book. Herodotus wrote that the Egyptians divided their land into twelve parts, and appointed a king for each of these parts. These kings decided to work together and create a memorial. hey built the Labyrinth near Lake Moeris just outside of Arsinoe (Crocodilopolis). Herodutus wrote that the labor and expense of the Labyrinth was superior to all of the buildings of the Greeks.

The Labyrinth layout included twelve courts, six on the north side and six on the south side. These interconnected courts were all covered by a slab roof and surrounded by a great wall. There was a vast array of chambers on the ground level, as well as the level that was underground. These underground chamber contained the twelve kings of Egypt as well as many chambers for the sacred crocodiles of Egypt.

Inside the labyrinth the passages, columns and interlocking courtyards made it extremely confusing to and almost impossible to not get disoriented. The roof was a giant slab of rock that covered the entire structure. The walls inside the Labyrinth were covered with inscriptions, paintings and intricate carvings.
