Ladder in the air
There's nothing like a free meal. Nothing is free and that stands true. A man of character would understand that no gift must be considered free. It is not right, ethically, to accept a gift or favor without the slightest intention of giving anything in the return, ever. Life is the remarkable gift of God. Along it come responsibilities that one must assume. Man is but animal without society. Everything we have or will have, we owe to society we live in, and return we must in equal measure. Not only our nation, but the whole world is somehow turning upside down with the changing times, invariably. Great men, in olden times, used to return to the society far more then they took. That was the motto of life. Take less, give more, stay content and die without guilt. One of the most frequently used words today after the F-word is 'enjoy'. Fun has never been wrong, unless the whole life starts revolving around it. Take and take and take, forget giving back. Even such intention is the crime that breeds all the rest.
For ages, wise men have chased the purpose and meaning of life and the key to life's misery. In essence, as we gain, happiness is directly proportional to the tendency of driving one's senses, not otherwise. We must not forget that India is best known for its contribution to the understanding and study in this regard. However, the high velocity and philosophy loaded words like Karma & reincarnation are left out here as they will only add to the confusion that prevails in abundance and the purpose will not be served. Simplicity best serves the purpose of demanding the reflection on society's vision as a whole. It must be added here that things had always been more sensible though, as long as the simple approach towards life existed.
However, never was there a time when man wasn't in pain. What has bred and multiplied is not pain but the artificial & homemade innocence. Had it not been for our forefathers, the world wouldn't have known categorically that it is more important to curb one unreasonable and ignoble desire than to satisfy thousands. About lust, gluttony, wrath, greed, sloth, pride and envy, we are well told, "touch them and you'll get hurt". We are failing to follow. But since our foundation was strong, we could not have afforded simply not to follow so we developed some kind of anesthesia and touched them over and again, rather embraced. Not knowing that when the high-effect fades, it's going to hurt like we can't handle.
How stable or torn we want our children to be is in our hands. The problem of Indian youth is that it aspires to run so fast and live life so to the fullest, without discipline, make it so big that life is left behind, evaporated and empty. The deadly combination of cultural shock and inertia is killing us already. Ironically, we are the best, and the worst in the making.
Stooping down to the greater details of social evils that prevail so apparently will be a curse to the author. Futile will be dwelling into the dark but flashing matters. But the wound must be opened and cleansed without shrinking, for the better. More so, when the dying society doesn't even know if there are any wounds. How innocent!
The 'not-so-innocent' teenagers and their 'oh-so-innocent' parents. The art centered around domestic politics and nothing but romance, romance and romance. Middle class skipping a meal, but not the latest cell-phone (with color screen and GPRS). Folks with minimum earnings and no savings discussing the stock market in a momentous, aristocratic fashion. The diehard religious preachers that would teach everything from politics to music but the simple rule of 'do good and be good'. The self above the rest motto of youth and the dangerous logo of 'enjoy'. The selfish and shrewd extrovert is in and the selfless reserved is in the shredder. What good did we do today, to anyone around, so we must enjoy and enjoy and enjoy and do nothing but enjoy? Is the cheering all about the rootless existence and hazy vision? Where are the simplicity and the plain but true morals? Where is the shame?
In solving the problem of 'more boys than girls' we lost our way; unfortunately, messing up big time. We challenged the nature and like a madman we struggled to make everything unisex. Now the problem is 'more boyish girls and more girlish boys'. No answer can be found to who to blame? That should not be the question in the first place. How do we do it? - irritates more. Is this how we do it? - makes some sense, if only asked to one's own conscience. Taking initiative. Trying as far and as long as one's faculties allow. It will take equal enthusiasm and positive mental frame like it did when we spoilt our daughters and sons. For instance, a reminder with respect to the thin line of gender must help, if backed with sound reasoning. Youth must be urged to regard their actions in this respect.
It is disheartening to find so few relationships today with the harmony and stability that our parents enjoyed? Spirit of sacrifice, brotherhood and tolerance is lost. Virginity is history. Lust rules. Extra-marital affairs and affairs before marriage are in vogue. Everybody is looking for somebody's arms to fall into, so desperately. Especially, the corrosion of modern women and middle-class psychology is heart-breaking. Women empowerment messed up big time. Being 'shamelessly bold', to abuse openly, to drink & smoke publically, frequenting discos and pubs, confused relations, abandoned family life, and pursuit of all that is controversial and upon all this if and when the consequences seem to go wrong taking the shelter in the disguise of the innocent Indian women of character, is only heart-breaking. The youth's translation of "making everyday beautiful and living life to the full" is more or less: the struggle for a collection of friends of opposite sex at tender age, followed by illicit relations, abortions, love marriages, extra-marital affairs, divorces, so on and so forth. What better to expect with the ubiquitous nude baloney broadcasted in the camouflage of art and faith?
Though it's noticeably simple and grateful to rejoice the quiet on fashionable tribulations, only corrective actions with honesty and courage will enable happiness. The vanity-fair must end now; it's the season for hard-work. Especially, the middle class needs to wake up instantly, set priorities, be logical, and be sensible. It is no disgrace getting down to the earth, back on job, and lessen the terrifically materialistic super standards and ambitions when they fetch no betterment to anyone but preventable danger to all.
Climbing the ladder in the air,
That leads you nowhere,
Maybe its half way, maybe more,
In the end, no heights to sore,
How many rules overrun,
How many hearts broken,
Wasn't it greener on ground?
If this is what, to be found!
Your super-ambitions breed crimes,
You took and ran many a times,
Climb not the ladders in the air, which lead, just nowhere.
