Lady Gaga is something of a polarizing figure in music

. After years of being a cult oddity, she achieved a mainstream fanbase and has become one of the biggest stars in the world, but her eccentric fashion sense and bizarre, self promotional persona have turned many off of her entirely. Lady Gaga ringtones have been a big part of her approach to self promotion, and any aspiring musicians out there should take note.

How would you describe Lady Gaga? Some call her the new age Madonna, others say she's the female Freddie Mercury. The fact is that we want to categorize her because it's been awhile since we saw an artist who didn't so easily fit into a category that was already set out for them.

When you look at rap, it's easy to think of Soulja Boy, Mike Jones and all the other rappers who say their own name repeatedly instead of rapping as basically being in the same category. You can look at Jack Johnson and all those other acoustic adult contemporary acts as the same thing. You can take Nickelback, Hinder and all the other post-Nirvana knockoffs and put them into a single category, but Lady Gaga is trickier to categorize.

And this is all part of her marketing approach, as well as her artistic approach. Whether or not her music interests you, when you see a woman with a machine gun bra on the cover of Rolling Stone, you know you're at least going to have your curiosity piqued.

Lady Gaga uses that curiosity and shock value to draw interest to her work as a musician, and it's actually quite clever. She had been drifting around the music industry as a backup singer and as a studio musician for years before realizing that this is what works: Get people's attention in a big way.

If nothing else, even if you don't like her music, you have to admit that she's a genius when it comes to marketing and shameless self promotion. The music she's putting out now is no different than it was when she was an obscure artist with a low-rent record deal, but since she's found a way to grab the public's attention, she's really become a household name. It's an interesting example of how far pure showmanship can go in the entertainment world.

The ringtone thing is another brilliant aspect to her marketing. Her songs are more than just a catchy hook, but they do contain catchy hooks, which makes them perfect for ringtones. This is essentially a form of automatic word of mouth. Her fans get a call in a crowded room, and that fan's friends say "Hey what's that on your ringtone?". This way, even people who don't think they like Gaga wind up getting turned on to her.

Whatever your opinion on her music, the fact remains that Gaga has figured out how to make a name for herself on the music scene better than just about any other artist out there. What it comes down to is the mix of catchy music that's worth listening to, and a persona that's loud, bold and one of a kind.
