Lady Gaga Tickets - Anime Contacts Have Fans Looking Through Gaga's Eyes

It was a shocking blend of haute-couture runway fashion and jarring

, arthouse sensibilities that instantly cleaved the public, forming fans on one side and those who just weren't sure what to make of her on the other.

But the standout image from that very busy visual montage was Gaga, staring into the camera with eyes widened into oversized pools of color. The effect was obviously created with the help of computer graphics, but that didn't matter to some fans. All they knew was Gaga looked cool, anime-style eyes or not.

Recently, the New York Times reported that many of those fans have now begun purchasing unique contact lenses to recreate the look for themselves. It's created a controversy among optometry organizations and the Food and Drug Administration, which regulates the use of contacts. Both professionals and regulators worry that the lenses could damage healthy eyes-especially considering the contacts in question, which are bought from overseas.

That hasn't stopped fans from buying them, however. According to the story, they cost $20 to $30 a pair, and those who can afford them have stocked up. Melody Vue, one of the sources the Times interviewed, is 16 and said she has 22 pairs of her own. Another source, a 19-year-old Rutgers student named Nina Nguyen, told the Times reporter that she was hesitant to try out the cartoonish contacts at first, worrying that they might affect her vision.

"Our eyes are precious. I wasn't going to put any type of thing in my eyes...What made me comfortable is so many girls out there wearing them," Nguyen said. Another source, a makeup artist named Michelle Phan, actually recorded a YouTube video entitled "Lady Gaga Bad Romance Look," a sign that Gaga's look has clearly caught on. Hopefully, her fans will take care to check with their optometrists before doing anything rash and using contacts that might not be safe for them.

The irony about all this is that the 24-year-old that inspired the trend never wore contacts to begin with. Again: The anime-style eyes she has in the video were computer generated. It's a testament to her knack for pop fashion that this quirky look has caught on with so many of her fans, even leading them to brand the look itself after their icon, Lady Gaga.

There are limits to how much she can influence her fans, of course. After all, most fans don't go to her shows dressed in see-thru negligee or space-age outfits that look as if they were designed in another world-or another dimension, even. The large appeal of Lady Gaga is she's almost a pop fantasy creation, someone that fans can live through as she dances on stage to pulsing beats.
