Lag Screws Are Simple Machines

For fastening characterized by a tool or machine with a helical ridge or thread wrapped around a cylinder, people use screws or bolts

. Mainly, screws are simple machines used to hold objects together or position various objects.

When it comes to look, screws have a head with a formed section on the top or on the sides of the head so that it can be turned or driven using a screwdriver or a wrench. The head is larger than the body of the screw which keeps it from being driven deeper than the length of the screw or bolt. The terms bolt and screw can actually be used interchangeably but usually, if one calls a screw, bolt, this means that it's a big screw. Bolts also sometimes come with a nut since they don't have a tipped end. This nut helps the bolt stay in place more securely.

One kind of bolt that can be used in construction is the hex head lag screws. Basically, they are wood screws with lengths of up to 15 inches. The diameter of the hex head lag screws can go from 0.25 inches to 0.5 inches. They are commonly available in hardware stores, mining and civil engineering equipment stores. With their size, hex head lag screws are more efficient. It's hard enough to drive a very large screw with a screwdriver and so the hex shaped head makes it easier to drive through in pieces like wood or concrete using a wrench. They are designed for securely fastening wood to masonry or concrete or fastening heavy timbers like posts and beams to make bridges for example.

Lag screws are usually used with an expanding insert referred to as a lag in masonry or concrete. This lag is made with a hard metal jacket that bites the sides of the drilled hole and the inner metal of it is made of material like lead. Hex screws have a course thread or a lag mesh that can deform itself when inserted to the wood or concrete making it ideal for water tight anti corroding secure fastening. To put together sheet metal to concrete and related materials, the hex head lag screw can also be used.

Hex head lag screws can be made of different materials depending on what you would like to use them for. It can be zinc plated steel where the steel is zinc plated for extra protection against rust. There are screws that come in the stainless steel alloy of 18-8 makes for higher corrosion resistance. Therefore, these kinds of bolts can be used in marine applications and exteriors. There's also the silicon bronze material which is an alloy of copper that has greater strength than brass. It is also corrosion resistant enough to be used for wood boat building and restoration. Lastly, they can be hot dipped galvanized making them more corrosion resistant and so they can be used in coastal areas and exteriors too.
