Lake Worth Toyota Tacoma Drivers Might See Toyota Electric Cars Soon
As if the Prius wasnt enough and then the plug-in models..
. Now Toyota has made a $50 million deal with Tesla Motors Inc., an investment in an electric car project to create lower-emission models. Lake Worth Toyota Tacoma customers may soon have the opportunity to buy fully electric vehicles which will compete with models which are being sold in the U.S.
The partnership between Toyota and Tesla also will allow Tesla to purchase a closed Toyota plant in California to build the Model S, providing domestic jobs. Reviving the New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. plant, known as Nummi, will do more than bring back jobs, it make bring back even more confidence in Toyota after their recall woes. Although customers dont seem to have been much affected, Toyota could use a boost in the media.
This seems like a good deal for both parties, especially Toyota, from being able to avoid the political fallout from shutting Nummi down to being able to offer a new electric vehicle with just a low initial investment cost, said Jeremy Anwyl, chief executive officer at Edmunds, an auto industry research firm.
Dealers of Lake Worth used cars certainly see this as a boon for Toyota, as the electric car in general has created so much buzz in the industry recently and Tesla, based in California, is the only company currently selling street-legal fully-battery powered cars.
Toyota, though, is not the only car company with a stake in Tesla. In 2009 Daimler AG invested about $50 with the electric car maker to supply Daimler with battery packs for a test fleet of its electric Smart mini cars. Daimler now only has a five percent stake in Tesla and the Toyota partnership will not directly compete with Daimlers investment.
Dealers of Lake Worth Toyota Tacoma are thrilled to see the reopening of the Nummi plant, which will create about 1,000 jobs, according to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The plant closed in April, but Tesla has already rehired about 90 former plant workers and plans to increase that number by about 50 each month. The Nummi plant in Fremont, California formerly had 4,700 workers.
The push for electric car technology has and will likely continue to increase with a new law in emissions standards being passed and with continued pleas from government that the U.S. reduce its dependence on foreign oil.
Toyota plans to produce a short-range electric car as well as begin selling the plug-in Prius in the United States by 2012. This comes just in time to meet the competition head-on, as the Nissan Leaf electric and GM Volt plug-in will both be available in the U.S. this year.
Tesla has 2,000 reservations for the Model S and will begin producing them at a higher volume in 2012. Buyers of Lake Worth used cars will have the opportunity to get plugged in before they know it.
