Lal Bagh An Unforgettable Respite Amidst Spellbinding Greenery

The shade of a tree, the rustle of leaves, the scent of a flower and the colour green

itself are some of the things that can relieve you instantly and bring peace of mind. When you travel to major cities packed with noisy traffic and concrete jungles it is inevitable to want to escape and get some fresh air amidst greenery.

Parks and gardens have been built in and around big cities to give a respite for the tired minds and bodies. Botanical gardens too are popular retreats where not only can you relax but also learn a world of things about flowers, plants and trees. India too has many botanical gardens nurturing numerous native and exotic plants. At these sites plants are not only cultivated but are also researched, constantly upgrading their quality and beauty.

India boasts a number of botanical gardens of which one of the best rests in the Garden City also known as Bangalore. This is the Lal Bagh Botanical Garden said to be one of the richest in diversity across South Asia. The botanical garden sits about four kilometres from the MG Road, set towards the south of Bangalore and spanning over an area of 240 acres.

Lal Baghs construction began in 1760 under the command of Mysore ruler Hyder Ali, but it was completed during his son Tipu Sultans reign. The garden followed a rich Mughal style, where a majority of its plants were introduced by Tipu Sultan.

Among the highlights of Lal Bagh is the impressive Glass House, built by John Cameron inspired by the Crystal Palace in London. Built in 1889 the Glass House presently hosts biannual horticultural shows. Exploring diverse flowers and plants arranged in mesmerizing patterns is indeed a one of a kind experience. You might even come across a sizable dinosaur and a giant strawberry among these floral beauties. The Glass House reaches its culmination of beauty when it is illumined at night, as the glass structure dazzles in a golden yellow presenting a spectacular sight.

Lal Bagh features scores of other structures like a pigeon house, bandstand, deer paddock, museum, aquarium and aviary. Kempegowda Tower sits in the midst of the botanical garden and was built by the founder of the city of Bangalore, Kempe Gowda. There is also a fascinating prehistoric rock formation named Lal Bagh Rock, which is as old as 3000 million years.

While exploring Lal Bagh you will get to see more than 1000 species of plants including indigenous, exotic and rare ones. Some of the rare species have been brought from countries like Afghanistan, Persia and France.

Places to relax are plentiful in Lal Bagh which offers refreshing fountains and sculptures and even a huge clock made of flowerbeds. You can take leisurely strolls along palm tree lined paths or sit on a bench under the shade of a big tree and fill up your lungs with the freshest air. There are also pavilions to relax complemented with stunning vistas of the area. Lal Bagh also has a serene lake tucked amidst multi coloured flowerbeds and neatly trimmed hedges sandwiching lush green turfs.

Book a Bangalore hotel and visit the Garden Citys precious jewel, the Lal Bagh for a deserved respite, rejuvenation and a wealth of knowledge and inspiration. Spend your holiday at a hotel that rests in the heart of the shopping, business and entertainment districts like The Gateway Hotel Residency Road Bangalore. Whats more this award winning hotel in Bangalore offers cosy spacious rooms together with the latest amenities in addition to great venues for hosting conferences and other important events.
