Land Of The Brave - Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is one of the Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean

.

The earliest human settlement on the island can date back to 500 BC. It was populated by the Guanches who were extinct long time ago. And the Guanches called their island Tamarn or Land of the Brave. Then, during the next century, French, Portuguese and others attempted to invade the island one after another. Unitil 1483, after a five-year campaign, the Kingdom of Castile occupied the island, which was considered to be a significant step towards the expansion of the unified Spain.

In 1492, the great navigator Cristopher Columbus spent some time on the island and then stated his first trip to the Americas.

The clime of the island is quite pleasant with average temperature of 20 C in winter and 26 C in summer. The lowest temperature could only be as high as 10 C which may happen far from the coast. Summer on the island is almost rainless and full of sunshine which produces some nice beaches for tourists, especially in the south part of the island.

What makes the island special is that a third of the island is under protection as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO due to the different climates and large variety of landscapes. The island possesses 32 Natural Protected Spaces such as the Rural Park of Nublo, Doramas' Jungle, the Ravine of Azuaje, Tamadaba, Pino Santo, etc.

Ground transportation of the island is quite well. The superhighway was opened on the island in the late 20th century as the first among the Canary Islands. It can reach places from the north to the south coast and the airport. The plan of building the railway on the island has been approved but cannot start due to the budget problem of the Spanish government.

Gran Canaria Airport, also known as Las Palmas Airport is main airport serving the island. The airport is just located on the island and is the fifth busiest in Spain. The airport started to operate from the year of 1930 and has become the largest gateway into the Canary Islands. There are two terminals: one is for domestic and European Union flights while the other is mainly for international flights. The average number of passengers that it can serve is around 9 millions a year.

There are simply no trains in Gran Canaria, therefore, it is wise to hire a car to help you get access to every attraction. It only takes you 40 minutes to traverse the island from the north to south and 20 minutes to cross it from the west to east. Make your booking online in advent to enable yourself to start enjoying the freedom that comes with car hire from the moment you arrive in Gran Canaria.

Car hire service can be easily accessible from Avis, Auto Europe, Budget car rental, Dollar rent a car, Enterprise, National, Hertz, Alamo, Holiday Autos, Sixt and Strawberry Autos.
