Landscape Maintenance - Less is More!

Face it, we all have busy lives today and it is nice when we can do something to make it a little easier

. One of the things we can do to make our lives a little less stressful is to install low maintenance landscaping.

Now, easy care landscaping does not mean that there is an absence of plants or lawn. In fact, it is quite the opposite. You just need to create a landscape that is less labor intensive. With careful planning, you can have a beautiful easy care landscape that you can virtually sit back and enjoy with very little effort on your part.

One of the most time consuming garden tasks is watering. However, if you automate your irrigation duties you can cut a large amount of maintenance time. Installing a sprinkling system that is controlled by a timer is a huge time saver. There are many types of sprinkler systems that you can use in your landscape. The most obvious is a watering system for lawns, but you can also have a system that will effectively irrigate your garden and flower beds as well.

Another time intensive gardening task is weeding. No one likes to see weeds in their yard, and it takes time every week to keep the weeds at bay. But there are measures you can take to keep the weeds down to a minimum. Here are three effective weed prevention methods that can be used alone or in combination with each other for maximum effect.

First of all, there is weed barrier fabric. This material is available at most home and garden centers and usually comes on a roll. You simply spread the fabric over the bare ground and cut slits or holes for the plants. This fabric allows water to penetrate, but prevents light from reaching the soil so weed seeds have difficulty germinating.

Next, there is mulch. Mulch is generally shredded bark or another organic material. This material is effective as a weed barrier when it is spread three to five inches thick over the soil. Just a note, because mulch is organic it will break down and eventually become a part of the soil so it will need to be replaced every year.

Another effective weed control method is the use of a pre-emergent herbicide. Pre-emergent herbicides create an invisible barrier that prevents weed seeds from germinating. Pre-emergent should be put down after you have finished planting and working the soil in the spring. You will then spread the powdered pre-emergent and let it be. You will find that the weeds in your yard will be greatly reduced by using this herbicide. For best results, use two or more of these methods together.

By changing the way you water and control weeds in your yard you can significantly reduce the amount of time you spend on maintenance each week. It is time to enjoy your yard, not dread it!
