As we all know, landscaping is both an art and a science involving precise manipulation of different elements to improve an area's practical and aesthetic value. Various environments with different moods are created by people who specialize in the field of landscape design. This has been very evident in St. Petersburg where artists have transcended the bounds of traditional methods of landscaping. Landscape design in St. Petersburg now focuses on the use of lighting, paveways, fountains, patios, and decks.

For any landscaping project to be successful in St. Petersburg, the right mix of softscape and hardscape elements of design should come to play. For beginners, softscape refers to the living objects used in landscaping such as plants, herbs, and shrubs. Meanwhile hardscape refers to those inanimate objects that are used in landscape design such as pavers, cements, pebbles,stones, etc.

Aside from these two areas, there are other elements of design that should be taken into consideration. These landscaping elements are very important because they are the visual materials that are used to establish a design. Here are the five basic landscape design elements that should be present in every project that you will embark on.

Element # 1: Color

Color has four properties that every artist can manipulate: hue, chroma, value, and intensity. Hue refers to the degree to which a stimulus can be described as similar to or different from stimuli that are described as red, green, blue, and yellow. Chroma has something to do with the sharp brightness of a color rather than the general fullness of it. Valueis the lightness or darkness of a color e.g. navy is a dark value of blue. Intensity is also known as saturation. It refers to the force or concentration of any given color. These four are responsible for enhancing the mood and character of any landscape design.

Element # 2: Line

This element is vital in guiding the direction of the viewer's eyes. In the area of landscaping, lines are used to focus, defocus, relate, and separate objects from one another.

Element # 3: Form

The third element is responsible for defining the shape and structure of any design. Forms are used in landscape design when manipulating branches of trees, or structure of hardscape materials.

Element # 4: Texture

In landscape design terminology, texture is the perceived surface quality of an object whether it is smooth or rough. For instance, the texture of a plant's foliage or bloom can be perceived as coarse, medium or fine. Texture can also be used to create a sense of contrast which is typically used to present a focal point, but which can also be used as a complementary principle away from any focal points.

Element # 5: Scale

Last but not the least, scale refers the adjustment in the size of an object relative to its surroundings. In landscaping, the general rule is that plants and structures in should be proportional to the human scale.
