Landscaping Tips To Help Sell Your Home

There is nearly universal agreement that we are going through the toughest housing market in decades

. And given that fact, sellers need every advantage they can get for their homes to stand above the competition. One of the best ways for a home to develop 'curb appeal' is through basic landscaping. Here's a handy checklist of areas that should be addressed.

Bushes

Good landscaping starts with well-trimmed bushes. Keep your bushes trimmed and clear of the windows. This is important for two reasons. First, it helps prospective buyers see the windows from the outside. Second, it allows them to see the sun shining when viewing the house from the inside.

Define Borders on Flower Beds

The flower beds on the outside are one of the more attractive features of a home. It is best to make sure the borders of these beds have clear definition. This will highlight them even more. And of course, get all the weeds out of your beds.

Keep Your Grassed Mowed Often

When you're just living in your house and not planning to sell, you can sometimes get away with cutting the grass after 2 or 3 weeks. But if your home is on the market, your buyers need to see freshly cut grass. Make sure your grass is cut at least once a week. And if you can't keep this task up yourself, consider hiring a lawn care service.

Keep Your Front Walkway Clear

This is a common issue that sellers often neglect; keeping a clear pathway to their front door. The last thing a buyer wants to see is overgrown grass obstructing their path to the house. It makes them feel less welcome, and creates an unneeded distraction that takes away from the other positives you've done to your exterior.

Get Rid of Outdoor Clutter

Okay, this may not technically be a "landscaping" tip, but it's still applicable to getting the exterior of your home into shape. This goes back again to living in the home verses selling it. While living there, you can and should have your toys out in the yard. After all, a yard is made to be enjoyed. But when you're selling your house, it's a whole different ballgame. Buyers don't want to see all your "stuff" scattered throughout your yard, it detracts from their ability to picture their own stuff in the yard. Keep everything neat and tidy, and keep trash cans and recycle bins in their proper place in the garage.

Get Your Car Out of Sight

Again, not so much a landscaping tip as a 'keeping your exterior clean' tip, but still quite important. When your house is up for sale, you never know how much 'drive by' traffic you're getting. These are usually people taking a quick look to see if they think the house is worth inquiring further. If at all possible, make sure to park your car in the garage, so this drive by traffic can have an unobstructed view of the exterior of the home.
