Words are referred as the visual part of speaking and they create the picture of an idea. Reading is considered the passive part of a language. When you learn the letters and listen to someone pronouncing them, you begin to learn to speak the language and this is considered the active part, actually speaking the words.

When you begin to progress to the point that you understand what your are reading in a foreign language, you are well on your way to being able to communicate with others in their native tongue. This is the ultimate goal of taking any language course and these are designed to have you interacting at advanced levels in a very short amount of time.

In the active mode of learning a language, it is easier for the person to retain what they are learning because they practice doing what the word describes and this makes it easier to remember. When you combine the action with speaking the word you will have a much higher rate of retention. This is what the active mode of learning is supposed to help you accomplish, faster learning.

When the passive mode is used, a person in only taught to see the words and then read them. They don't get this interaction of speaking and doing so the retention level is much lower. For the optimal results of learning a new language, the passive mode alone is not enough. It is necessary to have the interaction with the active mode.
