Lanyards Have Proved Handy Through The Years

Most people are familiar with lanyards, and they are a great item which can be used

in hundreds of different ways to keep items safe or identify individuals. Traditionally, a lanyard was used to fix a sword or pistol to a military uniform; mostly for those who could easily lose items such as cavalry or naval officers at sea. Lanyards were also often used for attaching whistles to a pocket or similar part of a uniform, as they were used frequently but small and easily lost.

Traditional lanyards were tied simply, to enable them to be removed and reattached by the user, but still stay connected to the chosen item during use; for example, a pistol whether it is in a holster or being drawn. Lanyards were often made from strong leather or cord, however braiding was sometimes used to denote the military status of an officer or a similar level of qualification. Braided lanyards such as these would often use a combination of two colored threads, and would be worn on a breast pocket or on the shoulders.

Many people still use a lanyard for holding whistles, such as sports coaches or dog trainers, and modern life has found many different uses for a lanyard, to help keep important items safe. One of the most common uses for a lanyard is to attach house or car keys to it, which is particularly useful for people who are prone to losing them! A brightly colored lanyard can be much easier to find in a hurry, and it can also be easily hung onto a hook, door handle, or even the end of a banister. They are particularly useful when keys cannot be left in a safe place, such as at the gym or sports field. Attaching a large brightly colored lanyard to keys saves millions of people time every morning as they can spot their keys quickly and easily!

Lanyards are a great idea for keeping hold of small but important items such as cameras or USB sticks. These electrical items are often expensive and can store a lot of personal and private data. Losing one can not only be frustrating but may mean losing work, pictures and even personal information. Securing a lanyard will help to keep the item safe and stop it from becoming lost in large bags or buried in drawers. Most USB sticks and digital cameras will have a small hole or connection point incorporated into the design, which a lanyard can be clipped through and secured.

Many cameras will come with a small wrist lanyard already attached, however this can often slip off easily and many people would prefer to use a larger lanyard which can be worn around the neck. This style of lanyard is also great for keeping USB sticks handy, and people who require access to their files on a daily basis such as teachers may find it a great way to keep their USB safe and to hand. Lanyards are a traditional way to keep your important items safe, and continue to be popular across the world for many different purposes.
