Lanzarote: A Volcanic Paradise Closer To Home
Labelled a Martian land because of its volcanic scarred landscape this island and
because of the weather it has managed to keep these features well preserved. Being of volcanic origin the popular holiday resort attracts a lot of curious sightseers and its home to the world's longest volcanic tunnel.
There has been no volcanic activity on the island since the early 1800's but it was considered minor compared to the major eruptions that occurred early 1700 which shape the land the way its seen today. The eruptions covered a quarter of the island covering many villages on its way. This destructive past has become one of the islands most appealing features for tourists with bus tours taking you through miles of canals that the larva has formed as it moved across the landscape all those years ago. The sights really are spectacular as it really does give the feeling your seeing something from another planet.
There is much more to Lanzarote than its volcanic past it is also blessed with beautiful white beaches and clear shallow waters that surround the coast of the island. The shallow waters are also ideal for children. There are many hidden coves to be discovered, and if you don't fancy trekking through the scenic and colourful landscape then you can take a boat trip that will sail you along the simply magnificent waters and they will take you to areas that may be a little out of reach.
With a blend of seafood and other meats Lanzarote offers great choices of cuisine. If you don't particularly want to sample local dishes there are many traditional Italian, Chinese and English orientated restaurants around the island. Placed in the Atlantic Ocean you will find a variety of influences to the menus from African and Latin America which it has picked up over the years. Goat is something you will find on most menus and is considered a delicacy on the island, especially baby kid. With the use of high quality and fresh ingredients the food tastes great and has vegetarians covered as well.
