Many tourists choose to spend their time on the island relaxing at seaside resorts, but it's important not to miss the Martian landscape of The National Park of Timanfaya.
The Montanans del Fuego (Fire Mountains)are the chief attraction in the National Park of Timanfaya. These volcanic mountains were most active between 1730 and 1736, covering the island in soot and destroying a huge amount of fertile ground. The island of Lanzarote has of course since recovered from this catastrophe, but the park itself is still largely unchanged since the period of eruptions. The area has a distinct alien landscape, complete with rolling mountains and volcanoes that emerge from theotherwise featureless surface. Rare plants eke out their existence makingthe park a destination for biologists as well as tourists. This amazing landscape will delight families and all other travellers with its truly unique landscape.
If you do venture to The National Park of Timnafaya there are two must see sites. Check out the Isolate de Hilario where you can see artificial geysers. These are created by pouring water into a magma chamber three kilometres below the ground. The hot chamber sends steam into the air to act as a reminder of the land's turbulent past. It's also worth visiting the El Diablo restaurant where you can feast on traditional Canariancuisine, all food is cooked using implements heated by geothermal energy.
