Lap Band Surgery How To Calculate Bmi (body Mass Index) - Nurse's Guide

If you're thinking about getting lap band surgery one of the first things you'll

want to determine is will you be accepted as a good candidate for this adjustable gastric band surgery. Of the bariatric surgeries, lap band weight loss surgery is considered temporary whereas gastric bypass surgery is a permanent surgery. In both cases you'll have to maintain a special weight loss diet or gastric bypass diet to assure that you lose weight and keep it off. No weight loss surgeries are miracle surgeries.

So one of the first things your doctor will want to know is if you can be accepted for the surgery and if you meet the qualifications. Usually the most important one is do you fit the morbidly obese classification.

To help determine if you're morbidly obese the lap band surgeon will want to know what your BMI or body mass index is. If your BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 then your weight is considered normal. If your BMI is 25.0 to 29.9 you would be considered overweight. A BMI over 30 is classified as obese. If your BMI is more than 40 than you would fit the super-obesity classification.

How to calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index)

Take your weight in pounds and multiply it by 703. Then divide the number you get by how tall you are in inches- your height. If you're five feet tall that would be 60 inches. If you're five foot five you would be 65 inches for example. Then divide that number by how tall you are (your height) in inches again. That number is your BMI or body mass index. Check the previous paragraph to find out if you're considered obese. Each surgeon may have their own BMI scale they use to determine whether they'll perform surgery or not. And over time this can change. So you'll need to check with your weight loss doctor or bariatric surgeon to find out if you can be accepted for lap band surgery.

Of course dieting and losing weight would be the best choice as surgery always carries some risks. The lap band procedure is preferable to gastric bypass and of course you want to avoid both if you can. If you're convinced lap band surgery is the best choice for you then get two or three opinions before you proceed. Do plenty of research so you understand the risks and complications that go along with the surgery.
