Depending on the scenario, a patient may have laparoscopic surgery. If they do, some of the risks/side effects from that include blood clots, wound ruptures, holes in the stomach or esophagus while the surgery is being performed, blood vessel damage, damage to the liver or spleen. Sometimes this may require additional surgery to remove the spleen.

There can also be issues with the band in regard to the surgery. Some of the Lap Band surgery risks/side effects in this include slippage of the band, an enlarged stomach pouch, band erosion, stomach slippage, band slippage and a deflated band.

With the Lap Band surgery, another issue is stomach obstruction. Some of the Lap Band surgery risks/side effects that derive from that include swelling, band slippage, stomach slippage, twisting of the stomach pouch, enlargement of the stomach pouch and the band not being placed on the patient properly.


There is also the case of the patient having a weakened esophagus due to binge eating, a tight band or not placing the band on the patient properly. One of the other lap band surgery risks/side effects is having the band tight on the abdominal area so that the patient can lose weight quicker. The band is designed for patients to lose weight slowly, so if the band is too tight too soon the patient may have an enlarged stomach pouch or esophagus because of it.

There are so many factors that can contribute to Lap Band surgery risks/side effects. Some of them can prolong the progress of a patients weight loss. Others can add back the pounds to a patients weight. Either way, its very important that if there is anything abnormal that the patient should consult the surgeon right away.
