Laptop Battery Charger Options
We believe that laptops are the future, not only of portable computing
, but of computing in general. Few devices blend together power and convenience as well as laptops and notebook computers. Modern models offer a desktop experience anywhere you go. And as laptops get more and more powerful while keeping a small form factor, often times the battery life takes a hit. Some laptops, like netbooks, offer up to 10 hours of life on a single battery charge, but this is not the norm. Although battery manufacturers are finding some ways to squeeze a few more precious moments worth of juice from these little cells, there is only so much they can do.
For some people, keeping an AC adapter in hand is a suitable solution, but others may not like being tied to a wall outlet or it may just not be possible for them. Others choose to carry a spare battery, but installing one battery, charging it with the AC adapter, removing that battery, installing the second one, charging that battery with the AC adapter... you can see why this may be a bit cumbersome. Then there are those that choose alternate forms of portable power. Whatever the case may be, there is really no reason to let battery life hinder your work, net surfing, or play when portability is important. Here are some ways to make sure you keep the power you need.
The first option you have when getting a laptop battery charger is to opt for using the AC adapter. This is by far the most popular method of laptop battery charging. Every laptop sold comes with an AC adapter for charging the battery and running the computer off AC current. While the idea of being tethered to a wall outlet while using your laptop may not seem like the picture of portability, there are ways to ease the hassle. For example, if you adapter is a large "brick" type, you can trade it in for a newer, more efficient slim version. A small, lightweight cord may make you forget about having to stay plugged in.
Alternatively, you can buy one or more extra AC adapters for your computer and keep them at different locations that you frequent, such as your home, office, or family's house. That way you can just worry about taking your computer and leave the cords where they are and you'll have one available if you need it.
If these options don't seem right for you, you may choose to go the multiple-battery route. As mentioned before, trying to charge two batteries with one computer and adapter can be frustrating. However, some laptop batteries have a compatible dual-bay charger which plugs into the wall and will charge two batteries at the same time. In preparation for a long trip, you could place both batteries in the charger the day before you leave and effectively double your standard battery runtime with little hassle. This is a great option for most power users.
Finally, if you still don't like these ideas, you may want to look into portable chargers. A portable charger, sometimes called an external laptop battery, will plug into the wall and charge itself. Then, when you are away from AC power, you can plug this portable charger into the adapter port of your computer and it will essentially act as a portable AC outlet, charging your battery and powering your laptop until the stored charge is depleted. These devices are usually designed to work seamlessly with you portable lifestyle, usually sitting directly under the laptop and adding only a slight thickness to the form factor.
