Laptop Repair: Quick Fixes For Cases And Fans

When a laptop has a problem, the usual solution is to take it to a computer repair shop for an expensive fix

. However, there are a few fixes that can be done by anyone. Laptop Repair doesn't have to be impossible to do with a few tools and a little knowledge.

Fixing a Broken Case

It's very easy to accidentally damage the case of a laptop. They aren't generally made to be able to withstand a drop on the floor or a hard bang against furniture. When a laptop gets a crack in it, it can be fixed so that more expensive repairs can be avoided.

Epoxy putty is the first tool that will be needed. It is very cheap and can be found at hardware stores. Try to avoid epoxy putty that sets quickly so as not to be rushed in fixing the laptop.

Begin the repair by making sure the crack or damaged area is free of debris or dirt. When the area is clean, grab a pair of disposable gloves to begin the process.

Squeeze out the epoxy putty; this putty will have two parts to it. Twist and thoroughly combine these two components to begin the reaction. When the putty is a uniform color throughout, that usually means it's ready to be used.

With the putty ready, fill the crack or hole in the case with it. Make sure the putty doesn't go into the case so far that it touches any components inside the laptop. This putty is going to be the substitute for the plastic casing and shouldn't touch any insides.

Use a razor blade to smooth out the area where it has been applied so that it won't have lumps or bumps. Once the crack or hole is filled and cleaned up, a couple of hours need to pass for the epoxy putty to set and cure.

When it has cured, it should protect the laptop well. Sandpaper can be used to give the area a smooth finish if desired. A permanent marker or paint could also be used to match the epoxy putty to the color of the laptop case, but this isn't mandatory.

Fan Cleaning

A dirty or clogged fan can cause major problems, so it should be cleaned regularly when the need arises.

To access the fan, unscrew the bottom of the laptop and take the case off. Research online or look in the laptop manual to learn exactly how to take the bottom casing off so no damage will be done.

Once the case is off, the location of the fan should be apparent. Using some compressed air with the straw attached, spray the fan to get rid of the dust and debris. Using a dust mask while cleaning is important, especially for people who are sensitive to dust.

Afterwards, inspect the fan carefully to make sure nothing is stuck between the blades. If something is wedged between the blades, carefully remove it. When it is completely cleaned, try gently spinning the fan manually to see if it makes a noise or has trouble spinning.

When all of the dust and debris has been sprayed out and the fan spins well with a quick test, reattach the case. With everything back together, turn the laptop on to see if the fan is working properly. If it is, that is all the help the fan needs.

Some laptop problems are serious and need to be fixed by a professional. Others are easier fixes that just require a little work. Laptop Repair does not always have to be expensive or difficult.
