Largest Dahlia Plot Is Not In Direct Sunlight

. Faust - of Swedish descent - must go a large share of the honor for having made the South dahlia conscious of the flower.

Years ago the dahlia was a second-rate flower in Georgia compared with others like the gladiolus, but it began to pick up in popularity when Mr. Faust took to dahlia culture in earnest. Being a business man, he looked to his garden for exercise and a hobby. He developed a sincere love for dahlias and devoted much of his time to the development and promotion of this flower in the South.

For years gardeners in Mr. Faust's area looked to him for recommendations of the best varieties to plant in the South, since he always tried new varieties from all parts of the country and systematically discarded any that are not perfectly adaptable to his locality.

His largest dahlia plot was nestled in a beautiful semi-circular area at the foot of a long, grassy slope running back several hundred feet from his house. It is surrounded by a natural amphitheater of three acres of grass slopes converging on the dahlia garden. First of all, the garden is a perfect example of cleanliness and orderliness and it is indeed a marvelous sight to stand on the hill and look down, on that garden of hundreds of plants in full bloom, each securely tied to a stake in perfect alignment with the others in the long rows.

The dahlia garden is so situated that it is not in direct sunlight all day. Some may wonder at that, but Mr. Faust believed that if dahlias receive at least four hours of sun each day they will make perfectly normal growth. Planting them away from competition of tree and shrub roots, he thought, it an important factor in locating the dahlia garden. Another point he emphasized was to have plenty of air circulation to prevent attacks of mildew and other diseases.
