Largest Swiss Led Lighting Project
LED Lighting solutions designed by Royal Phillip's Electronics have been used to
renovate the Hurdbrcke Bridge in the centre of Zurich, brightening up the neighbourhood and reducing energy costs. The LED installation, which measures 2.3 km (1.4 miles) in length and includes the upper side and underside of the bridge, has also been named the largest in Switzerland.
The Dutch consumer electronics and lighting company was approached by Zurich authorities in 2011. They were asked to supply a Lighting solution for the Hardbrcke Bridge, a busy overpass in central Zurich which serves as the main conduit between the North and South of the city, as well as providing connections to other parts of the country.
As well as renovating the streetlights along the Hurdbrcke's upper roadway, which is used by an estimated 70,000 motorists every day, Philips was also asked to upgrade the lighting on the underside of the bridge. The main goals of the project were to lower energy and maintenance costs, reduce light pollution and create a safe environment for motorists using the bridge's upper roadway and for pedestrians on the streets overshadowed by the bridge.
For Philips, energy efficient LED Lights were the obvious choice. According to market analysts, LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are expected to become the most widespread form of lighting by the year 2015. This is because they offer significant energy savings when compared with conventional light sources and a superior life span, contributing to reduced maintenance requirements.
The company's solution has been to supply 1,750 of its LEDline2 luminaires, a high-performance linear grazing light, which Zurich authorities have attached to the underside of the bridge, creating a mile-and-a-half ribbon of light illuminating the many pavements, cycle paths, road ways and tramlines in the neighbouring areas.
The Hardbrcke's roadway alone, which has been outfitted with Phillips' Koffer2 fixtures, has had its energy consumption slashed by a third, while the LED Lights serving the underside of the bridge use a tiny 25kW for 1,654 hours a year, which works out to an annual energy consumption of 41,000 kWh.
The Hardbrcke's entire installation, taking into account both the LED Lights above and below the bridge, have, according to Phillips, made this the biggest of its kind in Switzerland.
The new lights have completely transformed the Hardbrcke, reshaping the nocturnal image of the city and improving the quality of life for Zurich's residents. It has also demonstrated the feasibility of LED Lighting in meeting the challenges faced by urban planners.
