One of Denver's oldest shopping districts is Larimer Square. It is an area as rich in history as it is in fine shopping and dining. In 1858, Larimer Street between 14th and 15th streets was the entire community of Denver City. This street was lined with false-fronted stores, hotels, and saloons to serve gold-seekers and other pioneers. In the mid-1870s it was the main street of the city and the site of Denver's first post office, bank, theater, and streetcar line. By the 1930s, this part of Larimer Street had deteriorated so much that it had become a skid row of pawnshops, gin mills, and flophouses.

In 1965, when a group of investors purchased the entire block, plans were made to tear these structures down. All 16 of the block's commercial buildings, constructed in the 1870s and 1880s, were renovated, providing space for street-level retail shops, restaurants, nightclubs and upper-story offices. In addition, a series of courtyards and open spaces were created.

Today, Larimer Square offers shopping, the arts and nightlife. It has also become one of the hottest restaurant neighborhoods in town.
