Laser Cutting Services—The Next Generation Metal Fabrication Technology

Laser Cutting is a highly potent technology that can be used to cut a variety of

tough and resistant material including carbon and stainless steel, aluminum, copper alloys etc. The metal fabrication industry uses this technology extensively in the cutting and production of sheet metal. This cutting technology greatly enhances speed of productivity, decreasing production costs, and improving quality of cutting. The laser cutting technology is based on the emission of a light beam through a process of stimulation and uses a device that is called a laser or LASER, short for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation). The industry uses a variety of lasers based on the process they use to emit light beams. The most common ones include carbon dioxide laser or CO2 laser, which is a gas laser used expansively for welding across the industry. This type of lasers can produce a maximum of 100 KW of energy at 9.6 m and 10.6 m and can cut 20-30 meters of materials that are 1 mm thick in a minute.

While cutting the energy that is produced is aimed at a small portion of the material to be cut to produce a hole, the light beam is then moved along the line to complete the cut. Often, of course (when the material is handy enough) the material is moved across a point where a steady stream of light is projected. Where the powerful beam of light strikes the sheet metal it quickly heats up, melts, and evaporates. The amount of energy delivered through the lasers depends on the kind of material that needs to be cut. Materials that are thin require lesser amount of energy to be produced. However, on an average 1 to 1.5 KW of energy is enough to cut most materials, whereas steel and some other resistant materials require 2 KW or more of energy.

There are several advantages of using laser cutting services, like accuracy, quality of the job done, speed of cutting, and affordability. These advantages alone make lasers cutting services the most popular cutting service in the sheet metal fabrication industry. However, there are few disadvantages of using lasers for cutting metal; for instance, lasers require very high voltage to operate and apart from high power consumptions lasers also make you run the risk of burns or electrocution, for that matter. But, given the benefits of using laser as a technology for the cutting of sheet metal, it is no surprise that in spite of the disadvantages a large number of companies across the industry continue to user laser cutting technology to improve speed and precision of their work.

Till not very long ago, a lot of old-fashioned metal fabrication companies used other technologies to cut sheet metal and were not aware of the new revolutionary way of cutting metal. In fact till date a lot of people believe laser cutting processes to be a next generation technology that is still in the experimental stages. In fact laser cutting services have become widely popular among companies across the industry integrating extremely well with computer aided processes like CAD/ CAM and help companies work with automated processes. And, what's best is the end products are always as perfect as the graphic design on the computer. If you still do not use the technology it is time for you to find out.
