Usually the treatment is spaced three to eight weeks apart depending on the body and the hair cycle length for that area. Usually face requires more frequent treatments where as legs requires less frequent treatments. Dark hair on light skin is easiest to treat. Laser does not work well on light colored hair. Before the procedure, hair will be trimmed to a few millimeters above the skin surface. The laser equipment will be adjusted according to the color, thickness, skin color, the amount of energy needed for the treatment and location of hair.

The most common side effects include discomfort, swelling of the skin similar to sunburn, itching and redness that last one to three days. Other side effects include skin lightening, skin darkening and bacterial infection. Some level of pain should be expected during treatment. There are many risks like chance of burning skin, discoloration of the skin, hypo pigmentation (white spots) and infection. Patients are instructed to avoid sun exposure and to use a broad spectrum sunscreen.

Several wavelengths of laser energy, from visible light to near-infrared radiation, have been used for hair removal. Their wavelengths are measured in nanometers. Longer pulse widths may b safer for darker skins. Width of the laser beam can affects treatment. The width of the ideal beam is four times as wide as the target is deep. Laser lights have a spot size that helps to penetrate deeper and make treatment faster and more effective. Hair removals lasers are effective for treatment of ingrown hairs or shaving bumps.
