Laser Hair Removal and the Science Behind Elos Technology

Laser Hair Removal and the Science Behind Elos Technology

Unsightly body hair can be a confidence killer for many people. In addition, removing unwanted body hair via wax treatments or tweezers often proves to be a laborious and sometimes painful process. However, new laser hair removal technologies, including electro-optical synergy technology, are being used to safely give confidence back to people affected by unwanted body hair. Commonly referred to as elstechnology, electro-optical synergy technology is a non-invasive procedure that has proven to be a safe, effective method for destroying hair follicles in targeted areas.

What Makes Elos Technology Different from Other Laser Hair Removal Procedures

Elos technology uses optical energy to preheat targeted areas of unwanted hair to create a thermal path for radio frequency to follow directly to the hair follicle. This concentrated approach destroys hair follicles more efficiently than other laser technologies by targeting the germinative part of the hair follicle rather than the melanin found in the hair shaft, or hair bulb, as in the case of intense pulsed light technology. Intense pulsed light technology's dependence on melanin for targeting hair follicles renders it less effective than Elos technology at targeting lighter hair colors, because melanin is often contained at lower levels in light-colored hair. In addition, radio frequency energy is not absorbed by melanin chromophores in the epidermis. Therefore, a lower level of optical energy can be used which makes elos technology safer for people wanting to remove hair from dark skin.

Results of Elos Technology Studies

Two recent studies were conducted by Neil S. Sadick, MD of Weill Medical College at Cornell University to analyze the efficacy and safety of elos technology for hair removal. The studies proved elos technology to be an extremely effective and safe method for hair removal. In both studies, maximum hair reduction occurred 68 weeks following treatment, and hair density was observed to decrease progressively following each subsequent treatment. In both studies, hair removal efficiency was greater in subjects with dark hair. Results from Dr. Sadick's studies showed no significant dependence of treatment on skin color; both light and dark skin types responded similarly to treatment. Regarding safety, none of the patients in the studies developed blistering at the treatment site within 72 hours; blistering can occur in darker skin types following pure optical energy treatments. In addition, side effects were minimal. Erythema, or redness of the skin, was experienced by twenty percent of patients. Mild erythema was experienced by 14 percent of patients, but it resolved within 24 hours. Only eight percent of patients experienced transient hyperpigmentation, but it did not require therapy.

New methods of laser hair removal, including elos technology, can safely eliminate unwanted body hair. However, it is extremely important for each patient to consult a certified health professional to determine which procedure will work best for their unique situation.
