Laser Skin Resurfacing - General Cosmetic Enhancement Information
If you are unhappy with the appearance of scars
, fine lines and wrinkles, or other minor skin imperfections, laser skin resurfacing may be able to help you achieve the appearance you desire. Laser skin resurfacing is often used as a single treatment, as well as with various other cosmetic enhancement and improvement procedures to make the skin more aesthetically appealing.
During laser skin resurfacing, short pulsating beams of laser energy are directed at the afflicted areas of skin. Layer by layer, small amounts of damaged and superficial surface skin are removed. By removing the skin cells that are damaged by scars, wrinkles, discoloration, and warts, the healthy, smooth skin that lies beneath is brought to the surface.
Laser skin resurfacing can be performed on the entire face or on one specific location. The treatment is performed on an outpatient basis by a certified surgeon. If you are receiving a full facial treatment, the entire process may take one to three hours. Partial-face treatments can take as little as 30 minutes if only a small portion of skin is being treated.
You will generally be given a local anesthetic by injection at the treatment site, as well as a mild sedative. Depending on your surgeons preferences, you may be given the sedative orally or intravenously. Once the treatment is complete, sterile dressings will be applied that are left in place between one and three days. Your cosmetic surgeon will provide you with instructions on how to clean and care for the treated area, which will usually heal completely with two to three weeks. However, there may be some redness to the treated site that can last up to six months before it fades away.
There are very few risks involved with laser skin resurfacing, but as with any type of treatment of this nature, there are some complications that can occur in some individuals. Fortunately, many of these complications are not permanent and are easily treated, such as the milia, or small white bumps, that can appear on the treated site, or the possible pigmentation differences some people will experience that can easily be treated with cream.
