The Procedure

While there are alternatives available for patients who want to correct astigmatism, none are permanent and few are recommended above LASIK eye surgery. The surgery itself involves numbing the eye so there is no pain to the patient while the procedure is in progress. While it may not be the most comfortable you've ever been, the benefits are well worth the trouble. There may be some degree of pain and irritation after the procedure, but this can be easily handled with medication. The procedure itself is typically over in less than ten minutes.

PRK

For some patients, there is a similar procedure as LASIK eye surgery that is more appropriate for their circumstances. PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, uses lasers as well to correct astigmatism but it works by reshaping the surface of the cornea rather than the underside. Both are equally effective, though patients who undergo PRK will have a longer recovery time ahead of them. It may be three months or more before you can enjoy the full benefits of your corrected vision. The cost of the procedures is roughly the same. In most instances, the choice between procedures will be made on the surgeon's end, rather than the patient.

Improved Vision

It's difficult to get a sense of how the aftermath of LASIK eye surgery will be just by reading reviews and journals online. It can be tricky even after talking to your doctor. Every individual's path is slightly different. Some will sit up after the procedure and will instantly notice that their eyesight is perfect. For others, it could take several months for the full effects to manifest. It's easy to get discouraged during this time, but don't. If you follow instructions and keep your doctor informed of any symptoms you may be having, you will eventually have the improved eyesight you wanted and the wait will be just a distant memory.
