Last 100 Years In The History Of Yoyo: How Did It Get So Popular?
The yoyo, famous that it is today in America, also underwent its share of its ups and downs
. That is why several marketing experts are interested in its history so that the development will be traced and understood. And for those interested people, knowledge of the yoyo's history will also add to the appreciation of the toy.
It all started with Pedro Flores, he was the first ever man who ventured on the risk of producing yoyo in the United States. He was responsible for the popularity of the toy; but it was Duncan who bought the right from him way back in 1929. That was also the same year when the name Yo-Yo was given to it and the trademark was introduced.
Duncan's first important contribution in the world of yoyo was its popularity and technology called skid string. This was actually consisted of a sliding loop around the axle instead of a knot. And because of this breakthrough on the technology of yoyo, the trick called "sleep" was invented and performed for the first time. It was imperial or standard which became the original shape of the yoyo introduced first in the US.
He also made the emergence of one particular design that has the capacity to reverse the other side of the usual traditional so-called imperials one. It was called the butterfly shape. It allowed the toy player to steer the yoyo on the string itself using more ease, this even made it possible for even more tricks. He also managed to close a deal with a newspaper tycoon, William Hearst. The deal was in making fresh ads for yoyo in Hearst's publications.
In this deal, Duncan volunteered to open a competition and made the bringing of newest newspaper edition of Hearst as the entrance fee. Then, Duncan's first Yo-Yo, the O-Boy Yo-Yo, eventually became a total hit for the people. Later on, his yoyo factory greatly produced 3, 600 pieces every hour. And because of this, Luck, Wisconsin became the Yo-Yo Capital of the World in a wink of an eye.
The toy got its highest peak in sales in the year 1962; it was this time when Duncan got hold of a sale of 45 million yoyo pieces varieties. Although sadly, it was also the same year when Donald Duncan Company reached its fatal end. The increase of the toy product's revenue sales was surpassed by the grand costs of all production and all its advertisement. That time, Duncan began a new venture on the initial parking meters; an experiment in the beginning, and eventually became his living sideline.
This parking meter business became his moneymaker. And after being bankrupted, cutting out all yoyos' concerns had been easy for Duncan that he sold later on all the interests and the claimed rights in the most toys. The Plastic Company of Flambeau bought the name and trademark of Duncan. The Company also produced a variety of different yoyo lines that made it even more famous until today. The popularity of being used in outer space is also part of its achievement.
