Laundry Needn't Literally Cost the Earth

Washing clothes is one of those household chores that no one actually enjoys so few people put much planning into it and most do whatever they can to get it done as quickly as possible. In most cases, this will lead to an overuse of energy and a lack of appreciation of the impact on the environment.

The secret is to plan ahead. If you get a reliable weather forecast, plan to do your laundry on a dry day and hang the clothes outside to dry. If the weather isn't being kind, you could buy a few clothes airers to use in the spare bedroom or hallway where they won't get in the way and allow the heat in your home to dry the clothes while you're out.

Most modern detergents try to give better cleaning at lower temperatures, so look at what temperature you wash clothes at and put some loads on at cooler temperatures. Most washing machines allow you to alter the temperature of the wash, so experiment and see if the clothes are just as clean when washing at 30 degrees instead of 40? Not only does this save money by not heating the water as much, but you'll also find in most machines that the cycle is shorter.

While not always possible, try to make sure you only wash full loads. There will always be times when you need to put on a few items, sometimes because they're delicate or because you need them quickly. In cases like these, make sure you use the 'half-load' or equivalent setting on your washer. These settings reduce the amount of water used and so less energy is required to heat the water. This also cuts the amount of time the wash takes for most washing machines, giving you your clean clothes more quickly. Full loads are always much more efficient and cost-effective than half loads though.

Tips like these will never make your laundry day more enjoyable, it will probably always feel like a chore, but you can make sure you're as efficient as possible, as environmentally friendly as you can be and you should save money somewhere along the way.
