You can meditate sitting up straight in a chair (while on a plane or train, etc) or lying flat on your back, the traditional postures of meditation sitting cross legged is not necessary. If in the sitting position, pull your chin back slightly, like a soldier at attention, to align the back of the neck with the spine.
Whatever posture you are in, you should perform particular hand positions or mudras for the cosmic ordering meditation to be effective. Place your right hand with palm facing up on your right lap. The palm should be kept parallel to the floor. Now place your left hand with the knuckles snugly in contact with the right palm in such a manner that the right palm embraces the knuckles firmly.
Breathing during the entire meditation process can be done in different ways. You can either use your nose for both breathing in and out, or breathe in using your nose and breathe out through the mouth. There are people who perform meditation by using their mouth solely for breathing instead of using their nose. Use whatever method you feel comfortable with and adhere to it consistently. During inhaling your abdomen should expand and constrict while exhaling.
Here is a breathing meditation practice, sit up with your back is straight, inhale and hold the breath as long as you feel comfortable for a slow count of three, and then exhale through the mouth. The secret is not to force the air to stay inside of you, let it penetrate deep within you.
Keep practicing this and start counting for every inhalation and exhalation up to 10 and then back to 1. Keep this as one cycle and then begin again. This would make five complete breathing cycles for the first count of ten. Once you get used to this pattern you will look forward to your daily meditation sessions.
