Sometimes, soil analysis will reveal that your lawn needs the fertilizers that have one dominant nutrient, say a nitrogen fertilizer, a phosphorous fertilizer or a potassium fertilizer. Besides the compound (nitrogen-phosphorous-potassium) fertilizers, there are others that have one of those major nutrients as their only main component.

Depending on the type of fertilizer you are looking at, recommendations on when the best time for application is will tend to vary. There are some fertilizers that are best incorporated into the soil, before even planting the grass seeds. Then there are some fertilizers that are best sprayed to the grasses, in the course of their growth. Ultimately, soil analysis will reveal what lawn fertilizer you need to buy, with the instructions on the fertilizer packaging telling you what the best way to apply it is, and when the best time to apply the same is. Noteworthy is the fact that you need to follow those instructions keenly, keeping it in mind that when all is said and done, these fertilizers are rather potent chemical formulations.
