Lawn Mower Safety
Did you know that the most common piece of equipment for the garden, the lawn mower, causes over seventy five thousand injuries per year? Casualty departments across the country see this amount of admissions due to things going wrong when mowing the lawn, and it is one of the largest risk hazards in the UK in terms of gardening.
Make sure that you have read the manual properly before you start using your new machine. This way if anything goes wrong you can turn it off quickly and identify the problem and work out how to turn off the appliance without causing any harm to yourself.
Wear sensible clothes. Long trousers might get caught in the blades should you get too close, and shoes that don't have a lot of grip are also a bad choice. Dress sensibly to protect yourself. Flip flops are also a really bad idea so make sure that you have toes covered. Don't forget that a lawn mower could throw bits of stick or small stones up towards you, so be prepared.
Always start the mower outside; if you start it inside carbon monoxide fumes could build up, not to mention the fact that the shed doesn't really need mowing! It's not enough to keep it ventilated, just take it outdoors.
Never leave the mower unattended when it is running. It could be dangerous if it takes off, but also if you have children around it could cause serious injury. It is a heavy piece of machinery and should be treated with care.
If wires look worn then replace them or risk getting a severe electric shock, or having to go to the hospital.
Always turn the machinery off should you need to fix it or change the blades, or risk hurting yourself. Blades are really sharp, so make sure you are considering your safety before trying any problem solving.
If you own a home in the UK then go online forHome Contents Insurance to save your pennies to help beatify your garden. Policies are cheaper online and you should be able to find a good deal.
