Laxman Jhula – A Bridge Suspended Through Time
India could possibly be touted as one of the most diverse countries on the map
. With over a billion people calling it home, it is no surprise that you will find people from almost every walk of life residing within its territories. But that is not all that makes India one of the most interesting places to be in. The climate, the historical heritage and mlange of culture alone is enough to intoxicate anyone into loving the country. Mostly one is unable to make up one's mind, as each different region, city and town brings with it a unique flavour that will leave one fascinated and enamoured at the same time.
The country's fame is usually tied to its rich history. The Laksham Jhula Bridge is one such example of architectural and historical significance. It is a hanging bridge that stretches across the banks of the River Ganges. With a height of 70 feet and a length of 450 feet, this fabled bridge is said to be where Prince Laksham once crossed the Ganges River. The river that the younger brother of Lord Rama is said to have crossed was made out of jute, but in 1939 the old bridge was traded in for a new iron bridge built along the same lines.
The ancient significance of the site is the main factor that draws tourists to visit. This is the bridge that links the holy sites of Badrinath and Kedarnath together. The most-visited site in Rishikesh, the bridge garners its reputation not only from mythical tales but because of the more tangible temples and shrines that have been built around it. One of the temples is called the Terah Manzil; it's a 13-storey structure with a spectacular view from the top. Another temple that is directly tied to history of the bridge is the Laksham Temple. It is said that this was where Lord Rama and his brother Lakshmana stopped to take a bath in the kund after the killing of the cruel King Ravana.
