Leadership and Internet Marketing, How They Relate

First we need to define leadership, and then we can see how leadership and Internet Marketing correlate. So what is leadership? Simply put, leadership is influence. The process of becoming a leader is the acquisition of followers. A leader has followers or they are not a leader. In the same way Internet Marketers are in the business of acquiring followers whether in the form of email lists, friends on Facebook or readers of your blogs and articles. We serve those followers with our articles, products and mentoring programs. This is leadership. The better the content and value in our resources the better and more loyal our following will be.

The good news for us is that leadership can be taught and developed - you don't have to be born with it. Leonard Ravenhill tells a story about a group of tourists who were visiting a picturesque village. As they walked by an old man sitting beside a fence, one tourist asked in a patronizing way "where any great men born in this village?" The old man replied, "Nope, only babies."

So now we have defined leadership as the ability to get followers, we can work back from this point of reference to figure out how to lead.

Very often in business, education, politics, etc., leadership is confused with the ability to achieve a position, not the ability to get followers. The truth is you can have the position and all the status in the world but if no one is following you, you're not a leader.

In online marketing businesses, status has little to do with success and leadership. We learn how to influence and gain followers by providing a good service and being trustworthy. Maybe guru status will come at some point but success in leadership will need to come first. There are no shortcuts, you need to give people a reason to follow you. Do you have an answer to their problem? Can you teach them something valuable? Can you entertain them?

Here are 4 points to help keep us on track to becoming the best leaders we can be.

Everyone influences someone. Think about the people you lead (Influence). This is a great leveler, if you have family around you, work colleagues, and friends, you are already a leader. You already influence people and the decisions they make.

We never know who altogether we influence or how much. Momentary meetings with people can leave lasting impressions. Have you seen this work in your own life? I have many time, people I meet randomly can say a truth that has a great impact. We can learn and grow, maybe get the information from someone that we needed to make a key decision. These are leaders and influencers in our lives.

The best investment in the future is a proper influence today. So what kind of influence do you want to be? How will you grow your leadership skills? Are you willing to find someone to influence you and help you develop the skill you need to be a more effective leader?

Influencing is a skill that can be developed. First learn to communicate effectively, this will lead to recognition and this in turn will transform into influence.
