Your natural histamine is released from mast cells of histamine-storing cells and then attaches itself to other histamine-receptor cells. The attachment of histamine activates the cells to release chemicals that produce the effects associated with allergy. Fexofenadine works similarly with other second generation antihistamines such as cetirizine, loratidine and zelastine.

Indications:

As stated above, Fexofenadine is prescribed to treat the symptoms of hay fever or seasonal allergies in both children and adults. The drug is also used to treat hives and skin itching caused by chronic idiopathic urticaria in both children and adults.

Because Fexofenadine is a second-generation antihistamine, it does not enter your brain from the blood, thus it causes less drowsiness. The drug is available in tablet form in dosages of 30 milligrams, 60 milligrams, 180 milligrams and in 60-milligram capsule.

Precautions:

As with other drugs, it would be to your advantage if you consult your doctor before taking Fexofenadine, especially if you have allergies. It is also recommended to disclose your medical history to your doctor before using the drug, particularly if you have heart problems and kidney disease. While using this medication, it is advisable to limit alcohol intake as it may intensity side effects of Fexofenadine.

Side Effects:

Some of the known side effects of Fexofenadine include menstrual cramps, back pain, stomach upset, fever, cough, earache, stuffy nose or dizziness. Because this drug has the possibility to make you dizzy, exercise caution when engaging in activities that require you to be alert such as driving or operating a machine.
