Because of the falls from the equipments that majorly cause the injuries, injury protection is directed mainly towards reducing the occurrence of falls hence minimizing the likelihood of serious injuries when a child falls. This is mainly done through minimizing the height of the equipment from the ground level. Also by creating barriers, creating inconvenient upper surfaces which are not comfortable for sitting or climbing on.

Rather than allowing the children to slide by themselves, some parents prefer sitting with them and slide together. If the child's shoe gets stuck on the edges may result to breaking of child's leg. To avoid this, there is the strategy of installing a flexible surface around and under the play equipment so that even if a child falls no injuries can be reported. The effectiveness of these strategies to prevent injuries is much more debatable. This is because if the playground slide is made of padded materials, then the child will risk more.
