Learn About Popular Cuba Holidays And Make Plans To Visit During Special Festivities

There are 5 widely celebrated holidays in Cuba and by learning a little bit about

them you could plan your next Cuba holidays to fall on any of these dates so that you can celebrate with the locals and experience their national festivities. For a more authentic Cuba experience in which you can mingle with the islanders and participate in their celebrations here we give you the low-down on the countrys main national holidays.

On January 1st, while virtually the whole world celebrates New Year, Cubans also celebrate the Triumph of the Revolution. The Fidel Castro-led revolution was victorious on this date in 1959 and established the government that runs Cuba today. Cuba also has a Labour Day, although they celebrate theirs on 1st May, just like their Soviet counterparts once did and which is known as International Worker's Day. Other left-wing countries also celebrate May Day as Labour Day on 1st May including the People's Republic of China and usually this day is marked by military parades and elaborate popular parades.

On 26th July Cuba celebrates the Commemoration of the Assault of the Moncada garrison. This is the date when the revolution had originally begun and it was named after this day. Fidel Castro led about 160 men in an assault on the Moncada army garrison. The attack failed but marked the beginning of an unstoppable revolution. There are also holidays celebrated for the day before and after this day, so typically Cubans celebrate for three days in a row during these historic dates on July which are national bank holidays.

During the late summer months the city of Havana also celebrates carnival season, with lots of colourful parades arranged throughout the citys main street and avenues. You can get to join in party if you head downtown to the Malecon seaside promenade, where many people gather to see the parades pass by and youll see lots of local people dancing on the streets and celebrating Cuban style. The Santiago Carnival is the islands other main carnival, said to be even bigger and more legendary than the one in Havana and also celebrated during the summer months.

On 10th October, Independence Day is celebrated in Cuba. On this day back in 1868, Cuba began the 10 Years' War against the Spanish colonial power and the beginning of the colonial war was marked by one of its leaders setting his slaves free.

The final holiday celebrated in Cuba is Christmas, called Navidad as it is in most Spanish speaking countries. After Cuba's communist revolution took power this holiday was virtually eliminated but was reinstated in 1998 after the Visit of the Pope John Paul II to Cuba. These 5 Cuba holidays are the most popular in the country.
