Learn About The Most Common Sports Injuries
Any person who enjoys sports knows that it is very easy to get injured while playing them
, but that doesn't stop the average player from getting into the game, because they realize that it is a risk that they have to take. But most players do not know what the most common sports injuries are, or how to avoid getting them. While some sports injuries are complete accidents and can't be avoided, there are many that can be avoided by using common sense and taking good care of your body.
Superficial Injuries
Some of the most common sports injuries are superficial injuries. Superficial injuries often occur in very physical sports, such as baseball, soccer, or basketball. Many times they occur when the athlete falls onto the ground. The friction of the fall causes layers of skin to come off, creating a great deal of pain for the athlete thanks to the exposed nerve endings. If you do have a superficial injury, even if there is no bleeding, it is best to wash the area carefully with water and a mild soap, and then to use an antiseptic wash, such as hydrogen peroxide. Use an antibiotic ointment and a dry dressing to cover the abrasion for the first twenty-four hours and the superficial injury should heal fairly quickly.
Game Stopping Injuries
A superficial injury won't often stop a game, but there are many sports injuries that are serious enough to stop the player from finishing up whatever game they've been playing, no matter how much of a serious player they are. One of the most common injuries has to deal with the Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendon joins the soleus muscles and the calf to the heel of the foot. Because Achilles tendons are not very flexible, an Achilles tendon rupture can happen extremely suddenly, and the athlete will often feel or hear a pop sound. This type of sports injury can have a player on the bench for months. How can you avoid this type of injury? One of the best ways is to strengthen the calf muscles.
Another common sports injury is an ACL injury, or Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury. This type of injury happens when an athlete changes direction very quickly. It often occurs when an athlete slows down too quickly, or when they miss a landing when they're trying to jump. The ligament that is affected actually crosses over the knee, giving the knee stability. Many times ACL injuries are only sprains, but if injured severely enough, surgery can be required. The best way to avoid ACL injuries is to make sure that you don't do anything too suddenly during a game, and that you always stretch to get your body ready before you have a game.
Most sports injuries can be avoided by proper care and maintenance of your body, but it is also a good idea to speak with a physical therapist about how you can keep your body in the best shape so that you can avoid the possibility of having more sports injuries.
