Learn German Simply
Do you want to learn German simply? I'm sure you do.
Just remember, nothing works until you use it. You won't walk anywhere unless you use your legs, you can't cut the steak unless you use the knife, and you can't speak German unless you speak German.
There are some methods that can help you while youre studying.
Firstly, find a speaking partner. If you can't find a native speaker, find someone who is better at it than you. Meet with him or her as often as possible. Make sure it's at least once a week. Ask them to correct you when you make mistakes so you actually learn.
Secondly, if you can't find someone to meet with in person you can get a pen pal, better yet find someone online you can write. With the internet it's easy to write and to speak live with German speakers. You can send videos back and forth or talk live with Skype or a similar program.
There's no better way to learn German than to learn various phrases and words you already use every day. They come so naturally that you forget you say them at all. However if you do realize you are saying them, are you going to remember what it was that you wanted to translate? Maybe if you have a well-detailed notebook with you.
A notebook is really better than a recorder in this case. The reason is that it's a lot easier to flip through a notebook to find something than it is to listen to a bunch of recordings to find it.
Flash cards can also be fun; however I think it was a time waster, because I never carried them with me. I remember sitting outside on a bright sunny day. I was relaxing in the shade of a tree at the park. Just happily studying away with the flash cards I spent so much time making, organizing, and keeping track of which words I knew, which words I needed work on, and which words I had no clue about yet. I was feeling productive. Until that gust of wind blew by and scattered my cards everywhere. I think I got more exercise than studying done that day. Chasing cards across the park, jumping on them so they wouldn't go any further. Some ended up floating in the pond and lost forever. Some had big dark foot prints on them rendering them useless. That's when I discovered the ease and beauty of the notebook.
Youll have several notebooks you can refer to again and again. But you won't need to because you will have studied hard and know what's in them.
Finally, cut up some paper into little pieces and write, in German, the names of things you see around the house. Tape these to the object and every time you see that object say the word. As you get better at the words conjugate them into plural. This is a lot easier if you take it one room at a time. Label all the objects in your bedroom. When you get to where you know the words and are conjugating them.
