Learn Guitar The Lazy Way?

There is no doubt that being able to play the guitar and play it well is one of the most exciting and satisfying things you can achieve. Not only that - it is fantastically good fun!

So if you have decided that you would like to learn to play guitar - congratulations! You are about to embark on what could be a life long journey of fun and discovery. Just imagine the feeling you will experience when you are good enough to get up and play your favourite songs to your friends and family. Or how amazing it is going to be when you get to play lead guitar in your very own band!

Like I said, learning to play guitar is great fun but it is not without its pitfalls and it does require a certain degree of commitment to achieve a reasonable standard.

My first recommendation before you rush out and buy anything is to decide what style of music you want to play. This will set you in the right direction when it comes to choosing your guitar and any other equipment you may need.

Your next decision will be to choose your learning method. Learning guitar quickly is most peoples desire and there are many methods available, some good, some not so good and some that are just plain terrible.

There are two methods that I call the "Lazy Way" to learn guitar. These methods seem to be preferred by those who like to take the "short cut" to learning guitar. They are so keen to get started that they do not want to waste time (or money) waiting for a visit to a private or group tutor for guitar lessons, or having to spend time practicing, reading a book or watching a learning guitar DVD. They just want to get on and play!

The first "Lazy Way" is to "teach" yourself by listening to your favourite songs, picking up the notes and working out the chords until you can play the tune. This is called playing by ear and for most of us this is actually harder than learning in a structured manner. It usually results in the realisation that we need professional help (having wasted a lot of time, effort and frustration) or we give up altogether because it is just too difficult.

The second "Lazy Way" is to rely on friends to show you the ropes. This can work out fine if your chosen friend has been taught professionally and has the necessary teaching skills required to pass on their knowledge successfully. Most of us do not have friends like this, so although we may learn something this way we inevitably pick up all of our friends bad habits!

If you are really serious about learning to play the guitar, the quickest, cheapest and easiest way is from the professionals. Who else is better equipped to teach you?

There are many different forms of learning including personal one to one or group tuition, guitar books, CDs, DVDs. Learning guitar online is very popular with some great membership sites available. There are also plenty of e-books and downloadable tutorials. All these methods (or a combination of some or all of them) offer you a great variety of learning possibilities to suit all budgets and learning requirements. There really is something available to suit everyone.
