Learn How To Grow Grape Vines

Learning how to grow grape vines is something that many home gardeners are interested in

. Plants that have been properly cared for are capable of producing delicious fruit that you and your family can harvest and enjoy. They can also be strategically grown to provide a beautiful backdrop to any outdoor location.

There are many different varieties of grapes and the kind you decide to grow will depend on what your specific needs are. Grapes that are grown for the purpose of making wine are very different from those that are grown to eat. For some gardeners, the lush green backdrop created by the vines is what they want and the fruit is secondary.

Some plants grow better in certain geographical areas than others. Check with an expert at a nursery near you. You may be able to get advice from neighbors or friends who are already growing grapes in your area.

A clipping from a friend's vine can be used or you can choose a plant from a nursery. Build a support for your plant that is suitable for the location. This support needs to be strong enough to take the weight of the mature vine after the fruit has grown. Trying to build the support after the plant has grown will do damage, so it is best to have the support in place first. If you are putting the plant in your garden, a free standing support may be used. A trellis can also be placed right next to a wall or gazebo if you plan to train the vine.

The roots must be kept moist before they are planted in the ground. Choose a growing location that gets full sunlight. Soil that is rich and loamy is best and they will thrive in an environment that is sandy or rocky. The soil may be enriched with slow release fertilizer and compost. Make sure that the roots have good drainage. They will need to have lots of water for the first four weeks.

Training the grapevine on the trellis is the toughest part of the process for most gardeners. This step will take time and patience because young vines are difficult to entice into the proper position. Moving them often during the first season is recommended. Once they get going, maintaining them will be easier.

Proper pruning is the only way to keep the growing vine from becoming a tangled mess. It is also necessary for quality fruit production. Keeping the ancillary shoots trimmed back will allow more air and sunlight to reach the grapes as they grow. Wait until after the harshest part of the winter to prune the vines. By then the canes have hardened and there is a lower sap content.

Trim off any lateral shoots. These kinds of shoots will only suck up resources without growing properly. Weather ravaged buds will be brittle and brown. These should also be trimmed off. Careful pruning will result in a bountiful harvest from healthy plants.

Growing grapes can be very rewarding but dedication and time are needed for best results. The rewards are great to the gardener who can see it through. A bountiful harvest of grapes is possible with the right level of commitment.
