To learn how to play guitar is to struggle, and for awhile it won't seem like things are getting any easier for you

. However, one of the most important sources of beginning guitar information is often overlooked by starters.

When it comes time to really get down to business, doesn't it make sense to seek the guidance of a professional that's been playing for years? Chances are that you already know at least one person that's very good at playing the guitar, but you haven't taken the initiative to drill them on what they can offer you.

Take the time to set up a short conversation over the phone or in person and start getting all the information you need. Here is a standard set of questions that you should make sure to ask.

1. What guitar did you own first?

Just like you, when they were learning how to play guitar, they had to go through all the trouble of finding their first axe. With this information, you can find out what a good buy is, and what some choices to steer clear of are.

2. What guitar do you play now?

Most professionals don't play on the instruments they began with and there's a definite reason for that. Maybe they needed better playing action, more frets, or better tone.

You may not be able to afford what they're playing right now, but it's nice to get a glimpse of where your next purchases should be going.

3. What was the first song you ever learned?

You might just find out that the guitar tunes you're attempting to learn are way too difficult for your playing level. Getting some insight on what an experienced guitarist started with can point you in the right direction.

4. How long do you recommend a beginner to practice per day?

If the professional is in the right state of mind, they should be telling you to practice as much as possible. But knowing what their personal schedule is can help you possibly get to their level of expertise.

5. How long did it take you to learn your first song?

Learning how to play your first guitar song is one of the most frustrating things for a beginner, but if you know how long you're expected to be working, you're less likely to get discouraged. Think about what song you're attempting and if you can complete it in a similar amount of time and effort.

6. What would you have liked to know then that you know now?

This is really the most important question of the bunch and knowing the answer to this will give you a lead on all your friends.
