Learn How To Play The Guitar - 10 Tips to Get You Started
Learning how to play the guitar can be a major challenge. For many people that mountain is too steep to climb.
But it doesn't have to be that way. If you know where to start, the road to success can be a comfortable trip.
This article will show you were to start, by providing you with some tips on how to learn the basics without too much trouble.
It all comes down to this:
One thing at the time. If you are a beginner you wouldn't want to watch Al Di Meola and then grab your guitar and try to play like him. You have to start from scratch.
When it comes to learning the basics of guitar playing, I personally do not include such things as music theory, learning notes and so one. If you want to play, so play! There's enough time for the boring stuff later on.
That said, here are some useful tips to learn to play the guitar.(In no particular order)
1) Some things to buy:
- A guitar. It might be handy to have a guitar if you want to learn how to play.
But dont buy the very cheapest you can find.
- A guitar tuner. An electronic tuner is very easy to use, you can tune your guitar in less than a minute, and it's not expensive.
-Get a capo. The one I use (joyo jt12bclip) is not the cheapest one, but there are a lot of them out there for less money.
-Plectrum (Pick). Buy a bunch of them. Just like cig-lighters they have a habit of disappearing.
I guess you could find a lot more "good things to buy", but we should stay at the basics, right?
2) Get a chord chart. You can find them everywhere on the internet. Or go buy a chord book.
3) Chords:
Start with the "open" chords. They are easier to play, and learning barre chords are a bit harder. For a long time, F was the only chord for which I didn't use the open chord. Useful chords to start with can be C, A, Am, D, Dm, G, E, Em and F.
When you are familiar to these chords, practice the changing between chords. For example, a lot of songs use the sequence G, Em, C and D (over and over)(Try it! Play those chords and sing: "Always look on the bright side of life...")
4) Songs to play:
When you learn a song to play, it's very helpful to go with artists and songs that you love. There are 2 reasons for that. First, it's much more fun to play songs you like and you will automatically put more effort into your work.Second, if you already know how the song is played, there is no "learning curve" to that part of it.
5) Play often.
No, it's not enough to play for an hour a week. I'd say that 30 minutes each day is a minimum if you ever want to improve your playing skills. And do this at least 5 days a week. It would be a shame to get stuck with Parkinson, by the time you finally got all the chords right. So practice often!
6) Go slow.
Don't rush it! When you try to learn a new riff, or a new song, don't try to play it too quickly. Slow it down until your fingers know what they're doing. Then you can increase your speed.
7) Posture.
Don't laugh. It's more important than you think. You may think Slash look cool with the guitar hanging by his knees - or lower. But it's not the perfect posture when you are new to this. It's not fun when your back, shoulders and wrists hurt, just because you are sitting in a bad position.
Do a Google on the term "guitar playing posture". You will get more results than you ever wanted :o)
8) Calluses.
Your fingertips will have them. And they will hurt at first. And biting them off will hurt even more. So leave them alone. In time you will have hardened fingertips perfect for playing guitar.
9) Strings.
You may have a hard time fretting on an acoustic guitar. They mostly come fitted with 0.12 gauge, but if you replace them with 0.10 strings you will notice the difference.
10) Have fun!
Do not, even for one heartbeat, forget why you are playing on your guitar. Forgot already? Sitting there, cursing your disobedient fingers in frustration?
Put that wooden soundthingy aside for a while, and pick it up again tomorrow.
But why stop there? If you really want to be a praised guitarist and keep your audience spellbound, there's an easy way to get there.
Run over to Pelle's Guitar Stuff and find out for yourself! And from there? Well Sky's the limit!
Playing guitar is all about having fun. You are supposed to enjoy yourself - right? What's the fun of it if it's not fun?
