Hoodia gordonii is a unique cactus like plant that grows in The Kalahari Desert

. Hoodia has 20 different species of which Hoodia gordonii helps reduce appetite. These plants are found in small pockets spread over the arid lands of South Africa. It has juicy, purple flowers that appear once in every five years. The plant is generally harvested when it begins producing flowers.

This incredible plant is something new to the rest of the world but the natives, the Bushmen have known it for ages. It has helped them control their hunger and survive the harsh conditions of the desert. They can go for long periods without food and drink during their hunting trips by consuming this amazing plant. They have successfully used this plant to cure abdominal disorders, diabetes and even tuberculosis.

Hoodia came to world recognition after a 60 Minutes reporter published a report on it. Leslie Stahl went to the Kalahari Desert with a Bushman in search for the mighty Hoodia plant. She ate the Hoodia, and according to her she did no feel hungry or thirsty for the rest of the day and remained perfectly healthy. She experienced no stomach or cardiac problems and concluded that Hoodia had worked perfectly for her to suppress her appetite.

Hoodia contains a compound which is almost 100,000 times more effective and powerful than glucose. Upon consumption of Hoodia, this compound is released and it leads the brain to believe that a sufficiently large reserve of food is present in the stomach. This indicates to the brain that the body no longer requires anymore food and consequently a person does not feel hungry.

The national laboratory of South Africa has carried out research on Hoodia and the results were promising. The animals that were fed with Hoodia registered a loss in weight. The chemical agent responsible for suppressing appetite, p57 was successfully isolated. A comparative clinical study between actual Hoodia and a placebo was also carried.

The subjects were divided into two groups, one being given Hoodia while the other being given a placebo. It was found that the group which opted for Hoodia showed a marked decrease in body fat without any side effects. There have been various other studies to support that Hoodia is capable of reducing calorie intake by 50 percent. It also proved helpful in curing diabetes among overweight rats (especially over fed for this study) while reducing their weight as well.

The Government of South Africa is responsible for controlling and regulating all Hoodia production. When you buy Hoodia products, ensure that that they have C.I.T.E.S. certificate accompanied with an independent lab report confirming the authenticity and quality of the product. The company Phytopharm holds the license for the p57 as granted by the South African government.

Pfizer was also initially interested in Hoodia but returned their sublicense to Phtyopharm after failing to produce a pharmaceutical product in a cost effective manner. Unilever and Phytopharm are now collaborating with each other to develop an economical product with the use of p57 molecule. We hope to be seeing the product being made available to the public in a few years time.
