The guitar staff consists of six horizontal lines where the bottom line represents "E" and on the other bottom by "A". There are numbers that represents each line for you to know which tab to fret. Guitar tabs that show several numbers vertically would mean to strung or play all the notes at the same time. But when it is diagonal, it would mean to play the chords one at a time. Chord names are usually shown in the tab for easy identification.

The "p" for full off, "h" for hammer on, or the "^" which means you could either hammer or full off. Other symbols would be "b" for bent to "r" for return of bent. You may also notice this symbol "" which means descending slide, and "/" would mean ascending slide. A vibrato would be "v" but some tabs would present it as "~" or "~~~". The 'X" would mean string mute. Tapping with the right hand would be shown as "t"., the use of harmonics would be presented as "".
